Internship Thoughts

Entry #10
Date: 8/28/16
Activities: Youth Group Kick Off!
Technical Information: PowerPoint, Publisher, Printer

Reflection: Today was the first day of Youth Group for the year! This is one of my favorite nights because I get to see a lot of friends that I haven't seen all summer and it was even better seeing all of the things I did over the summer. For example, I made a Kick Off sign that everyone that came took a picture with and the calendars that I made were on display as well. We also used the Energizer list and the song PowerPoint which was fun because I got to get up in front of the youth and show them what I had done that summer very informally.

Topic: Overall, this was a good internship. I had a lot of freedom which was nice, especially when it came to lunch. However, I was bored a lot and wish I had more interaction with people. I now know for a fact that I do not want a desk job because I do not think I would be able to handle the monotony of sitting down and doing work all day. In the end, it was great to see everything I had accomplished over the summer being put to good use and see it continuing to be used throughout the year.

Major Problems and Frustrations

Entry #9
Dates: 8/22/16 - 8/25/16
Activities: Making copies of information sheets and stuffing folders
Technical Info: copy machine

Reflection: This week I did a lot of clerical work, as my big tasks for the summer had been completed. I made about 400 copies of flyers, handouts, and medical forms combined, throughout the week and stuffed 100 folders. Although this was rather boring and mundane work, I got to be in the main office which meant I had a lot of activity going on around me. At one point, our fire alarm kept going off so we had mechanics come in to fix it and then our printer broke so that had to be fixed as well. Overall, this was my favorite week of my internship because I had the most interaction with people.

Topic: I was often frustrated with the fact that I was alone most of the day. Sometimes I would just get up and move around because I was so bored and would complete my work quickly so had nothing to do. I handled these frustrations by going into the main office and talking to the people in the front and having fun conversations with them. All in all, this was a minor issue and was easily fixed.

College/Career plans

Entry #8
Dates: 8/15/16 - 8/18/16
Activities: Compiling a document of songs and energizers (choreographed dances to songs) for Youth Group, making finishing touches on the website
Technical Info: Word, Wordpress

Reflection: My internship is winding down now which means I am doing more planning activities for the upcoming Youth Group kickoff. I found all the energizers that the youth group has ever done and compiled them into a word document, printed them on large paper, laminated them, and then put them on a metal ring. I also made some final touches on the website with formatting and images.

Topic: I have talked a lot about college with my coworkers and supervisor and the piece of advice that has stuck out to me is that I am not tied down to whatever I choose to do. Right now I may want to go into the medical field and study at the University of South Carolina, but if I decide that major or school is not the right fit for me, I can change it. I have always thought of college as a very permanent thing, but I can always switch majors or transfer schools which is a comforting thought. This thought process has changed my plans for college and my career in that I do not have to stick to either one if I do not like it.

Career Plan

Entry #7
Dates: 8/9/16 - 8/11/16
Activities: Working on the Group Games booklet, create a post card
Technical Information: Pinterest, Word, Canva, copy machine

Reflection: I am nearing the end of my internship and I have pretty much completed everything that I was supposed to over the summer. I spent most of my days this week compiling games to put into the booklet. I also created a post card as a "Save the Date" for the first Youth Group. This was cool because I got to be creative and use my personal designs on online templates. Once the post card was done, I copied it onto card stock, cut them out, and put postage on them. I was able to talk to some of my friends and they said they got the post card and it was super cool to say "I made that!"

Topic: This has not changed my thoughts on pursuing a career in the medical field. I know for sure that I do not want a desk job because it is so boring and monotonous. After awhile, I get distracted and don't have motivation to finish my work for the day so I just stop which is not ideal in a work setting. By having a job in a hospital, I will be moving around a lot and meeting and speaking with patients and therefore will not be tied down to a computer in a lonely room.

How my duties have changed

Entry #6
Dates: 8/2/16 - 8/4/16
Activities: Creating a Youth calendar, searching group games, organizing closets
Technical Information: Publisher, Pinterest, Word

Reflection: My supervisor was out of town the rest of the week so I continued working in her office. Part of working in her office, however, meant having to reorganize her supply closet. I spent an entire day and a half taking everything out of the closet and putting them back in a more orderly manner. It got quite monotonous, so I broke it up by searching through Pinterest for group games to compile into a book of games that could be used at Youth Group.

Topic: My duties have not changed very much from the beginning to now, but my responsibility has changed a lot. I have proven my trustworthiness because my supervisor let me spend a whole week in her office with her not there to overlook my actions. I was responsible and stuck to my duties even though I could have strayed and she would not have known.

Main Contribution

Entry #5
Date: 8/1/16
Activities: Song lyrics powerpoint, making an e-news template
Technical Information: PowerPoint, Canva

Reflection: Today was the first day my supervisor was not at work with me. It was nice because I got to stay in her office and work which meant I was around more people which I liked a lot. I had a list of tasks to do for the week and she had me start on whichever ones I wanted without highlighting any that she wanted done first, so I got to pick and choose what I did. I had a lot of freedom today which I liked a lot.

Topic: My biggest contribution at my internship so far has been my update to the Youth Page on the website. I added many pages within that page and made it more visually pleasing. I am proud of how it turned out and how the set up looks as well as the information that I put on it. I was able to play around with different pictures and formats which I really enjoyed. This is definitely what I'm most proud about.

Internship Expectations

Entry #4
Dates: 7/25/16 - 7/28/16
Activities: Work on website, update forms, attend a Presbytery meeting
Technical Information: Wordpress, Publisher

Reflection: This was another week with a different set up than past weeks. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday were normal days where I worked on the website and continued updating forms, but on Tuesday, I attended a Presbytery meeting. The Presbytery is a large gathering of leaders from over 100 churches in Eastern North Carolina. On this particular day, we met in Wilson at First Presbyterian Church Wilson at 8:00 am and it went until about 3 pm. It was basically a very long meeting discussing different aspects of the church and their opinion on them. For example, HB2 was very hotly debated and many people got up to debate their stance. Overall, it was very interesting but also very long and boring. I got to talk to a lot of people though and utilized my AOIT soft skills.

Topic: The internship is meeting my expectations in that I expected to be alone a lot and just being productive with what tasks I have been given. I am able to listen to music which is great, but I get bored a lot because I don't have a lot of people to talk to. It is definitely something I can control because I can leave the library more, but at the same time, the only room I really have room to work in is the library, so not much can be done about that.

Classroom Experiences

Entry #3
Date: 7/18/16
Activities: Getting materials together for an upcoming Youth retreat
Technical Information: Using the printer and copy machine
Reflection: Today was a very casual day and I did a lot of running around the church getting things prepared for a retreat that the Youth, and I, would be leaving for tonight. I prepared coolers of snacks and printed out a lot of information sheets as well as made copies of medical forms for the advisers attending the retreat. It was much different than the past weeks I've had at work because I had a lot more interaction with the other employees in the church which I enjoyed because being shut up in the library is very boring.

Topic: My classroom experiences have helped me learn when to ask for help on something. There is always a certain point in a class when I have tried everything I can think of and still need help on a certain topic, so I ask the teacher for help. Today I definitely experienced that because I was using the printer which I had never used before and although I had a brief tutorial on how to use it, I was not prepared for anything unexpected to pop up. At one point, the screen displayed a warning about the glass being dirty, so I tried to clean it, but the notification still appeared. At that point, I went and asked my supervisor why it was saying that even after I had cleaned it.

There is not much that I wish I had learned before this internship. Most of it I have already learned and all of the programs I am using are ones that I have used since elementary school. I work by myself so I don't have other interns that I have to learn to deal with, but if I did, I would most likely want to know how to be productive if I do not get along with everyone I work with.

Work Atmosphere

Entry #2
Dates: 7/5/16-7/7/16
Activities: Updating registration forms, work on song lyrics PowerPoint, edit website
Technical Information: Publisher, PowerPoint, Wordpress

Reflection: This week I started to get into the grind of work. I spoke to my supervisor in the morning when I first arrived and she would have a list of things for me to do now and some to do later. I mainly worked on creating a list of songs to sing at Youth Group and putting the lyrics onto a PowerPoint presentation. I was also given some retreat registration forms that I had to update and modernize so that they were more visually pleasing. Finally, I started my work on the Youth Page of the Kirk website.

Topic: The work atmosphere at the Kirk is extremely casual and laid back. My supervisor and the head pastor joke back and forth from their offices and even the office assistants in the front of the office would get in on the action. It is very collaborative because once a week all the pastors and the head of the music program meet and discuss what to put in the upcoming church service. The dress code is business casual, but jeans are okay and even encouraged by one of the pastors there. I personally prefer dressing up because I feel more professional that way.

Purpose of the Business

Entry #1

6/29/16 - 6/30/16
Activities: Learned how to use Wordpress, refilled Children's Worship Bags
Technical Information: HTML coding and Wordpress

Reflection: This was my first week at my internship so there was a lot of basic information that I learned. For example, I was told what my schedule would be every day and what tasks or assignments I would get. Then, I would go into the small church library and work on them with a computer work provided for me. I could take lunch whenever I wanted and for as long as I wanted and then come back and finish up work for the day.

Topic: The Kirk is a Presbyterian church affiliated with Presbyterian Church, USA. There are two services a week; 8:45 am and 11:00 am on Sunday mornings and they serve anyone willing to join the congregation. I am going to be the intern to the Youth Pastor and will primarily work with the Youth program. I will edit and update the Youth Page on the Kirk's website, make a song lyrics PowerPoint, update registration forms and more, to help make Youth Group run smoother.
